THE IACS ALSO WILL DRAW ON THE UNIQUE STRENGTHS, GEOGRAPHIC REACH, AND FACULTY/STUDENT COMPOSITION OF TRADE SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY COLLEGES, UNION TRAINING PROGRAMS, AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION. THE NEW IACS WILL FOCUS ON HIGH-QUALITY SKILLED TRADES JOB PATHWAYS IN FIELDS SUCH AS INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN, ENERGY MANAGEMENT, RENEWABLE ENERGY, AND ADVANCED MANUFACTURING, WHILE PROVIDING HANDS-ON SUPPORT TO SMALL AND MEDIUM MANUFACTURES. EACH INVESTIGATION IS CAREFULLY CRAFTED TO EMPHASIZE THE NATURE OF SCIENCE AND PROGRESSIVELY INCREASE THE LEVEL OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY EXPECTED FROM STUDENTS. THROUGH THIS APPROACH, THE CURRICULUM SUPPORTS STUDENTS IN UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS OF SCIENCE, LEARNING KEY EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE CONCEPTS, DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC SKILLS, AND GAINING CONFIDENCE AND INTEREST IN STEM. THE COLLECTION REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION BY BEING SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS, BOTH ONLINE AND IN PERSON, WITHOUT REQUIRING SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT. IMPORTANTLY, THE APPROACH SUPPORTS IMPLEMENTATION ACROSS INSTITUTIONS REGARDLESS OF AVAILABLE FUNDING, RESOURCES, OR INSTRUCTIONAL MODALITY. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT STRENGTHENS UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION BY SHARING THE COLLECTION AND UNDERLYING APPROACH WITH EDUCATORS NATIONWIDE AND OFFERING TRAINING ON EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION AND ADAPTATION. ULTIMATELY, THE PROJECT FOSTERS THE DEVELOPMENT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO BECOME ENGAGED, COMPETENT, CRITICAL CONSUMERS OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION. THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO: 1) ADVANCE INNOVATION IN EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE COURSES AT TWO-YEAR COLLEGES, 2) PROMOTE THE SUCCESS OF NON-STEM MAJORS AT TWO-YEAR COLLEGES BY IMPROVING SCIENTIFIC LITERACY, AND 3) ENSURE TWO-YEAR COLLEGE FACULTY HAVE EVIDENCE-BASED RESOURCES TO EFFECTIVELY ENGAGE WITH NON-STEM MAJORS. TO MEET THESE GOALS, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO CREATE, IMPLEMENT, EVALUATE, AND DISSEMINATE A COLLECTION OF LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS DESIGNED FOR ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE OR IN-PERSON USE. THESE INVESTIGATIONS ARE DEVELOPED AND PILOTED AT PARTNERING INSTITUTIONS LOCATED ON OPPOSITE COASTS OF THE COUNTRY. THE DESIGN FRAMEWORK GUIDES THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND IS EXPECTED TO BE REFINED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT AND ULTIMATELY SHARED WITH THE BROADER GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION COMMUNITY. AN ADVISORY BOARD SUPPORTS ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT, PROVIDES REGULAR FEEDBACK TO STRENGTHEN IMPLEMENTATION, AND OVERSEES ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION ACTIVITIES THAT EMPLOY MULTIPLE MEASURES TO EXAMINE STUDENTS' SCIENTIFIC LITERACY AND UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS. DISSEMINATION EFFORTS FOCUS ON BROADLY SHARING THE CURRICULUM THROUGHOUT A WIDELY USED REPOSITORY AND OFFERING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT PREPARES FACULTY TO IMPLEMENT THE MATERIALS IN THEIR OWN CONTEXT. | Department of Justice | THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND (CCRI) PROPOSES TO CREATE WORKFORCE PATHWAYS FOR CURRENTLY INCARCERATED AND PREVIOUSLY JUSTICE-INVOLVED RHODE ISLANDERS. CCRI PROPOSES TO WORK WITH PARTNERS TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT A MULTI-YEAR STRATEGY TO SUPPORT THE ADDITION OF SEVERAL PROGRAMS, DELINEATED IN THIS PROPOSAL, IN RHODE ISLAND. THE INITIATIVE WILL CREATE INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYMENT FOR JUSTICE-INVOLVED RHODE ISLANDERS. THE PROPOSED OUTCOME WILL BE TO BUILD EMPLOYMENT-FOCUSED EDUCATION THAT ADVANCES EQUITABLE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR INCARCERATED RHODE ISLANDERS. THIS PROJECT WILL BUILD UPON CURRENT WORK, A 20-YEAR PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CCRI AND THE RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS (DOC). RHODE ISLAND IS A NATIONAL LEADER IN HIGHER EDUCATION FOR JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS. TO DATE, CCRI HAS AWARDED 110 ASSOCIATES DEGREES AND 14 CERTIFICATES IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION TO JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS WHILE INCARCERATED THROUGH CCRIS FORMAL PARTNERSHIP WITH DOC. IN 2022, CCRI TRAINED MORE THAN 4,000 RHODE ISLANDERS IN WORKFORCE PROGRAMS DIRECTLY TIED TO LABOR MARKET NEEDS AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH RI EMPLOYERS. THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE WORKFORCE PROGRAMS TO JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS, MAKING STUDENTS A PART OF THE WORKFORCE AND MINIMIZING THEIR RISK OF RECIDIVISM. CCRI HAS ALSO ESTABLISHED A COMPUTER NUMERICAL CONTROL (CNC) MANUFACTURING PROGRAM, PROVIDING IN-DEMAND VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND ACADEMIC CREDITS LEADING TO A CERTIFICATE AND DEGREE. CCRI IS PARTNERING WITH DOC, RI MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION, RI DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND TRAINING, GOVERNORS WORKFORCE BOARD, AND POLARIS MEP, TO SUPPORT JUSTICE-INVOLVED RHODE ISLANDERS. THE NEW IACS WILL FOCUS ON HIGH-QUALITY SKILLED TRADES JOB PATHWAYS IN FIELDS SUCH AS INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN, ENERGY MANAGEMENT, RENEWABLE ENERGY, AND ADVANCED MANUFACTURING, WHILE PROVIDING HANDS-ON SUPPORT TO SMALL AND MEDIUM MANUFACTURES. THE NEW BTACS WILL EXPAND THESE BENEFITS TO COMMERCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS TO HELP LOWER UTILITY COSTS AND ALLOW COMPANIES TO REINVEST IN BUSINESSES, EMPLOYEES, AND COMMUNITY SERVICES. BTACS WILL TRAIN STUDENTS AND WORKERS AS ENGINEERS, ARCHITECTS, BUILDING SCIENTISTS, BUILDING ENERGY PERMITTING AND ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS, AND BUILDING TECHNICIANS IN ENERGY-EFFICIENT DESIGN AND OPERATION. DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING THROUGH EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS AT TWO-YEAR COLLEGES -THE PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY CREATING A COLLECTION OF EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE SCIENTIFIC LITERACY OF UNDERGRADUATE NON-STEM MAJORS. EACH INVESTIGATION IS CAREFULLY CRAFTED TO EMPHASIZE THE NATURE OF SCIENCE AND PROGRESSIVELY INCREASE THE LEVEL OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY EXPECTED FROM STUDENTS. THROUGH THIS APPROACH, THE CURRICULUM SUPPORTS STUDENTS IN UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS OF SCIENCE, LEARNING KEY EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE CONCEPTS, DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC SKILLS, AND GAINING CONFIDENCE AND INTEREST IN STEM. THE COLLECTION REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION BY BEING SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS, BOTH ONLINE AND IN PERSON, WITHOUT REQUIRING SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT. IMPORTANTLY, THE APPROACH SUPPORTS IMPLEMENTATION ACROSS INSTITUTIONS REGARDLESS OF AVAILABLE FUNDING, RESOURCES, OR INSTRUCTIONAL MODALITY. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT STRENGTHENS UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION BY SHARING THE COLLECTION AND UNDERLYING APPROACH WITH EDUCATORS NATIONWIDE AND OFFERING TRAINING ON EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION AND ADAPTATION. ULTIMATELY, THE PROJECT FOSTERS THE DEVELOPMENT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO BECOME ENGAGED, COMPETENT, CRITICAL CONSUMERS OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION. THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO: 1) ADVANCE INNOVATION IN EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE COURSES AT TWO-YEAR COLLEGES, 2) PROMOTE THE SUCCESS OF NON-STEM MAJORS AT TWO-YEAR COLLEGES BY IMPROVING SCIENTIFIC LITERACY, AND 3) ENSURE TWO-YEAR COLLEGE FACULTY HAVE EVIDENCE-BASED RESOURCES TO EFFECTIVELY ENGAGE WITH NON-STEM MAJORS. TO MEET THESE GOALS, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO CREATE, IMPLEMENT, EVALUATE, AND DISSEMINATE A COLLECTION OF LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS DESIGNED FOR ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE OR IN-PERSON USE. THESE INVESTIGATIONS ARE DEVELOPED AND PILOTED AT PARTNERING INSTITUTIONS LOCATED ON OPPOSITE COASTS OF THE COUNTRY. THE DESIGN FRAMEWORK GUIDES THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND IS EXPECTED TO BE REFINED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT AND ULTIMATELY SHARED WITH THE BROADER GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION COMMUNITY. AN ADVISORY BOARD SUPPORTS ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT, PROVIDES REGULAR FEEDBACK TO STRENGTHEN IMPLEMENTATION, AND OVERSEES ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION ACTIVITIES THAT EMPLOY MULTIPLE MEASURES TO EXAMINE STUDENTS' SCIENTIFIC LITERACY AND UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS. DISSEMINATION EFFORTS FOCUS ON BROADLY SHARING THE CURRICULUM THROUGHOUT A WIDELY USED REPOSITORY AND OFFERING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT PREPARES FACULTY TO IMPLEMENT THE MATERIALS IN THEIR OWN CONTEXT. THE NSF IUSE: INNOVATION IN TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STEM EDUCATION (ITYC) PROGRAM SEEKS TO ACCELERATE AND ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE IMPACT OF EMERGING AND EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES IN UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION AT TWO-YEAR COLLEGES. THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND (CCRI) PROPOSES TO CREATE WORKFORCE PATHWAYS FOR CURRENTLY INCARCERATED AND PREVIOUSLY JUSTICE-INVOLVED RHODE ISLANDERS. CCRI PROPOSES TO WORK WITH PARTNERS TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT A MULTI-YEAR STRATEGY TO SUPPORT THE ADDITION OF SEVERAL PROGRAMS, DELINEATED IN THIS PROPOSAL, IN RHODE ISLAND. THE INITIATIVE WILL CREATE INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYMENT FOR JUSTICE-INVOLVED RHODE ISLANDERS. THE PROPOSED OUTCOME WILL BE TO BUILD EMPLOYMENT-FOCUSED EDUCATION THAT ADVANCES EQUITABLE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR INCARCERATED RHODE ISLANDERS. THIS PROJECT WILL BUILD UPON CURRENT WORK, A 20-YEAR PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CCRI AND THE RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS (DOC). RHODE ISLAND IS A NATIONAL LEADER IN HIGHER EDUCATION FOR JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS. TO DATE, CCRI HAS AWARDED 110 ASSOCIATES DEGREES AND 14 CERTIFICATES IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION TO JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS WHILE INCARCERATED THROUGH CCRIS FORMAL PARTNERSHIP WITH DOC. IN 2022, CCRI TRAINED MORE THAN 4,000 RHODE ISLANDERS IN WORKFORCE PROGRAMS DIRECTLY TIED TO LABOR MARKET NEEDS AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH RI EMPLOYERS. THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE WORKFORCE PROGRAMS TO JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS, MAKING STUDENTS A PART OF THE WORKFORCE AND MINIMIZING THEIR RISK OF RECIDIVISM. CCRI HAS ALSO ESTABLISHED A COMPUTER NUMERICAL CONTROL (CNC) MANUFACTURING PROGRAM, PROVIDING IN-DEMAND VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND ACADEMIC CREDITS LEADING TO A CERTIFICATE AND DEGREE. CCRI IS PARTNERING WITH DOC, RI MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION, RI DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND TRAINING, GOVERNORS WORKFORCE BOARD, AND POLARIS MEP, TO SUPPORT JUSTICE-INVOLVED RHODE ISLANDERS. CCRI HAS A PROVEN TRACK RECORD WITH WORKFORCE PARTNERSHIPS AND IS WELL-POSITIONED TO PROVIDE IN-DEMAND AND RESPONSIVE PROGRAMMING TO MEET THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF THE JUSTICE-INVOLVED STUDENT POPULATION THROUGH DOC PROGRAMMING. TO BUILD ON THE CURRENT MODELS IN PLACE, THIS PROJECT WILL COMPLETE OBJECTIVES IN THE SUPPORT OF A COLLECTIVE-IMPACT MODEL THAT REDUCES BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT: IDENTIFY AND PROJECT ACADEMIC AND CAREER PATHWAYS THAT PRODUCE IN-DEMAND HIRING FOR THE JUSTICE-INVOLVED POPULATION THAT LEAD TO OPPORTUNITIES FOR GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT UPON RELEASE (PATHWAYS TO BE PROVIDED BOTH WITHIN THE RI DOCS FACILITIES AND/OR OFFERED ON-CAMPUS POST-RELEASE.) DESIGN A COLLECTIVE IMPACT MODEL THAT REDUCES BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT THROUGH THE CREATION OF A SUPPORTIVE SERVICES MODEL.
