PURPOSE:THE FUNDING WILL ALLOW ELMIRA COLLEGE TO PURCHASE A FOURIER TRANSFORM (FT) NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE (NMR) 80 SPECTROMETER AND FUND THE NECESSARY NETWORK UPGRADES THAT WILL AID IN THE ABILITY TO TRANSMIT LARGE DATA SETS MORE EFFICIENTLY.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED:FUNDING WILL BE UTILIZED TO PURCHASE THE NMR SPECTROMETER, IT NETWORK EQUIPMENT, AND FOR THE INSTALLATION OF FIBER OPTIC CABLING.EXPECTED OUTCOMES:THE NMR WILL PROVIDE ELMIRA COLLEGE WITH A QUALITATIVE INSTRUMENT THAT PROVIDES STRUCTURAL INFORMATION OF UNKNOWN COMPOUNDS, AS WELL AS CONFIRMS THE STRUCTURE OF KNOWN COMPOUNDS. IT WILL BE USED IN MANY PROGRAMS AND FOR A VARIETY OF COURSES, INCLUDING THOSE IN BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, FORENSIC SCIENCE, AND MEDICAL LAB SCIENCES. THE INSTRUMENT WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE TO FACULTY WHO WOULD LIKE TO USE IT FOR RESEARCH.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES:ACQUIRING AN NMR SPECTROMETER ALONG WITH THE IT NETWORK UPGRADES WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON BOTH LABORATORY COURSEWORK AND RESEARCH CAPABILITIES FOR ELMIRA COLLEGE'S FACULTY AND STUDENTS AND WILL HELP PREVENT NETWORK LAG AND DOWNTIME IN MANY OF THE ACADEMIC BUILDINGS.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.
