TEAM UP TO REDUCE BARRIERS FOR YOUTH TO ACCESS DRUG FREE OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT TRUSTED ADULTS IN SOUTHWEST COLORADO - TEAM UP IS A COALITION OF LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO REDUCE SUBSTANCE USE AMONG YOUTH IN THREE COUNTIES (DOLORES, LA PLATA, AND MONTEZUMA) IN RURAL SOUTHWEST COLORADO. THE COALITION IS FOCUSED ON INCREASING PROTECTIVE FACTORS AND REDUCING RISK FACTORS FOR YOUTH BY REMOVING BARRIERS TO OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE PROSOCIAL COMPONENTS, ARE EVIDENCE-BASED, AND/OR HAVE SIGNIFICANT CONNECTIONS TO TRUSTED ADULTS. SOME OF THESE BARRIERS INCLUDE TRANSPORTATION, COST, LANGUAGE, A LACK OF A SENSE OF BELONGING. TEAM UP INVOLVES YOUTH IN THE STRATEGY DESIGN AND DECISION-MAKING RELATED TO LOCAL PROGRAMS THROUGH A YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH COUNCIL. TEAM UP IS ALSO WORKING TOGETHER TO PROVIDE OUTREACH AND EDUCATION FOR PARENTS, CAREGIVERS, AND KEY COMMUNITY ADULTS TO BUILD THEIR SKILLS TO BETTER SUPPORT YOUTH WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH OR SUBSTANCE USE CHALLENGES. TEAM UP IS BUILDING AN ADVOCACY PLAN TO BETTER MAKE POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY CHANGES THAT SUPPORT YOUTH. THIS COALITION HAS BEEN WORKING TO IMPROVE OUTCOMES FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES FOR MORE THAN TEN YEARS AND HAS SIGNIFICANT COMMUNITY TRUST AND IMPACT.
