FRIENDS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA AND THIS BODY OF WORK WITH PARTNERS BUILDS ON A BROAD, REGIONAL COLLABORATION AMONG LOCALITIES, STATE AGENCIES, BUSINESSES, AND NONPROFITS TO TRANSFORM THE TRADITIONAL ECONOMY OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA AND THE POVERTY RESULTING FROM THE LOSS OF TRADITIONAL INDUSTRIES OF TOBACCO, COAL AND LABOR-BASED MANUFACTURING. THE RESULT SHOULD BE AN INVIGORATED ECONOMY THROUGH CREATIVE ECONOMY DEVELOPMENTS FOCUSING ON THE ARTS, CULTURE, HERITAGE, RECREATION, TOURISM AND SMALL BUSINESSES. THE 19-COUNTY, FOUR CITY FOOTPRINT OF THE PROJECT INCLUDES 77 DISTINCT LOCAL OR COUNTY GOVERNMENTS. THIS PROJECT BUILDS UPON CAPACITY BUILDING AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY EFFORTS ALREADY UNDERWAY IN THE REGION AND WILL ALLOW EXPANDED SERVICES FOR MAXIMUM IMPACT. THIS PROJECT WILL FALL UNDER THE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY AREA OF THE VISTA PROGRAMMING PRIORITIES AND WILL RESULT IN IMPROVED ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR NO OR LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS THROUGH IMPROVED JOB SKILLS OR IMPROVED JOB READINESS AND SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS AS THEY DEVELOP THEIR CAPACITY THROUGH SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT AND VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT. FRIENDS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA REQUESTS FIVE (5) VISTAS TO WORK ACROSS SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH REGIONAL PARTNERS AND LOCALITIES TO BUILD COMMUNITY CAPACITY AND EXPAND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERSERVED AND LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS THROUGH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM EXPANSION. IN ADDITION TO THE VISTA LEADER, VISTAS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO TEAMS AND FOCUS AREAS TO COMPLIMENT THE WORK CURRENTLY UNDERWAY ACROSS SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA: * OPPORTUNITY SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA VISTA COMMUNITY BUILDERS -- FOUR (4) * SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA VISTA MARKETING BRAND BUILDERS -- ONE (1) THIS PROGRAM IS EXPECTED TO LAST FOR THREE (3) YEARS IF FUNDED.
