BROADLY THE GOAL OF CMBE CONFERENCE IS TO CATALYZE 1) THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MOLECULAR, CELLULAR, BIOIMAGING, SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY, AND SINGLE-CELL TECHNOLOGIES FOR PROBING AND MANIPULATING CELLULAR DYNAMICS AND FUNCTION, 2) THE APPLICATION AND TRANSITION OF THESE CUTTING EDGE APPROACHES FOR UNDERSTANDING THE ORGANIZING PRINCIPLES OF COMPLEX CELLULAR AND TISSUE SYSTEMS ACROSS SCALES, AND 3) THE TRANSLATION OF THESE ADVANCEMENTS IN WAYS THAT ULTIMATELY BENEFIT HUMANITY, SUCH AS ACTIONABLE MODELS OF BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES, DRUG SCREENING SYSTEMS, AND CELLULAR BIOSENSORS TO SENSE AND RESPOND TO ENVIRONMENT CUES. THE THEME OF THE 2024 BMES CMBE CONFERENCE IS “SYSTEMS BIOENGINEERING: FROM MOLECULES TO CELLS TO TISSUES”. WITH THE 2024 CONFERENCE, WE AIM TO FOCUS ON AN INTEGRATED VIEWPOINT OF COMPLEX BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS USING “SYSTEMS BIOENGINEERING” AS A FRAMEWORK. SPEAKERS WILL DESCRIBE THEIR ENGINEERING APPROACHES TO DECONVOLVE THE COMPLEX MOLECULAR, CELLULAR, AND TISSUE SYSTEMS WITHIN THE HUMAN BODY THROUGH QUANTITATIVE AND MODELING APPROACHES. WE HAVE RECRUITED SEVERAL ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING RESEARCH LEADERS IN KEY DEFINING RESEARCH AREAS WITH STRONG FOCUS ON UNDERSTANDING CELL STATES IN DEVELOPMENT AND DISEASES, WITH PARTICULAR FOCUS ON IMMUNE SYSTEMS, AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOENGINEERING. THE OUTCOME OF THE CONFERENCE WILL BE INCREASED TECHNOLOGY SHARING AMONGST RESEARCHERS, AS WELL AS A NEW VISION AND STRATEGIC PLAN FOR ENGINEERING BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS FOR BASIC SCIENCE AND CLINICAL TRANSLATION. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS R13 APPLICATION ARE TWO-FOLD. THE FIRST IS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO EIGHT ESI JUNIOR INVESTIGATORS AND TWELVE POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS OR GRADUATE STUDENTS, WHOSE SUBMITTED ABSTRACTS WILL BE SELECTED FOR PODIUM PRESENTATION BASED ON SCIENTIFIC MERIT, WITH A FOCUS ON PROMOTING WOMEN AND UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES. THE MEETING WILL PROVIDE THESE INVESTIGATORS WITH ESSENTIAL EXPOSURE AND MENTORING TO LAUNCH OR EXPAND THEIR ACADEMIC RESEARCH CAREERS. THE SECOND OBJECTIVE IS TO FOSTER ADOPTION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO THE CMBE RESEARCH COMMUNITY AND PROMOTE THE INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION. THE MEETING WILL PROVIDE A PLATFORM TO EXPOSE RESEARCHERS IN ENGINEERING, CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY, AND DATA SCIENCE TO THE LATEST TECHNIQUES AND DEVELOP A PATHWAY TO INCREASE THE IMPACT OF CMBE RESEARCH IN HUMAN DISEASE. THE THEME OF THE 2025 CONFERENCE WILL BE ?CELL ENGINEERING FOR MECHANOMEDICINE AND REJUVENATION?. THE PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON APPLYING NOVEL AND ADVANCED CMBE TECHNIQUES, MATERIALS, AND MODEL SYSTEMS TO RESEARCH IN VARIED PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND REGENERATIVE MODELS. THIS IS REFLECTED IN THE 2025 BMES ANNUAL MEETING (OCTOBER 8-12, 2025, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA) THEME: “BRIDGING HEALTHCARE GAPS: THE ROLE OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING.” BMES SEEKS NIH SUPPORT TO EXPAND ACCESS TO CAREER ADVANCEMENT AND GRADUATE EDUCATION PROGRAMMING FOR STUDENTS AND EARLY-CAREER PROFESSIONALS, PARTICULARLY THOSE FROM SMALLER ENGINEERING SCHOOLS AND PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS (PUIS), WHERE ACCESS TO RECRUITING, FUNDING, AND MENTORING IS OFTEN LIMITED. WITH THOUSANDS OF ATTENDEES AND NICHE PARALLEL TECHNICAL PROGRAM TRACKS, THE NEXT THREE ANNUAL MEETINGS WILL PROVIDE NEARLY 10,000 RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PRESENTATIONS IN PODIUM OR POSTER PRESENTATION FORMAT AND MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATION AND NETWORKING. THIS PROJECT COVERS THE 2023 BMES ANNUAL MEETING RUNNING FROM OCTOBER 11-14, 2023 AT THE SEATTLE CONVENTION CENTER IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON. THE THEME OF THIS “THE CONVERGENCE OF THREE PILLARS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR FIELD: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION.” BMES SEEKS FUNDING FROM THE NIH TO SUPPORT TRAVEL AWARDS THAT WILL ENHANCE DIVERSITY OF PARTICIPANTS AT THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE BMES. BROADLY THE GOAL OF CMBE CONFERENCE IS TO CATALYZE 1) THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MOLECULAR, CELLULAR, BIOIMAGING, SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY, AND SINGLE-CELL TECHNOLOGIES FOR PROBING AND MANIPULATING CELLULAR DYNAMICS AND FUNCTION, 2) THE APPLICATION AND TRANSITION OF THESE CUTTING EDGE APPROACHES FOR UNDERSTANDING THE ORGANIZING PRINCIPLES OF COMPLEX CELLULAR AND TISSUE SYSTEMS ACROSS SCALES, AND 3) THE TRANSLATION OF THESE ADVANCEMENTS IN WAYS THAT ULTIMATELY BENEFIT HUMANITY, SUCH AS ACTIONABLE MODELS OF BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES, DRUG SCREENING SYSTEMS, AND CELLULAR BIOSENSORS TO SENSE AND RESPOND TO ENVIRONMENT CUES. THE THEME OF THE 2024 BMES CMBE CONFERENCE IS “SYSTEMS BIOENGINEERING: FROM MOLECULES TO CELLS TO TISSUES”. WITH THE 2024 CONFERENCE, WE AIM TO FOCUS ON AN INTEGRATED VIEWPOINT OF COMPLEX BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS USING “SYSTEMS BIOENGINEERING” AS A FRAMEWORK. SPEAKERS WILL DESCRIBE THEIR ENGINEERING APPROACHES TO DECONVOLVE THE COMPLEX MOLECULAR, CELLULAR, AND TISSUE SYSTEMS WITHIN THE HUMAN BODY THROUGH QUANTITATIVE AND MODELING APPROACHES. WE HAVE RECRUITED SEVERAL ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING RESEARCH LEADERS IN KEY DEFINING RESEARCH AREAS WITH STRONG FOCUS ON UNDERSTANDING CELL STATES IN DEVELOPMENT AND DISEASES, WITH PARTICULAR FOCUS ON IMMUNE SYSTEMS, AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOENGINEERING. THE OUTCOME OF THE CONFERENCE WILL BE INCREASED TECHNOLOGY SHARING AMONGST RESEARCHERS, AS WELL AS A NEW VISION AND STRATEGIC PLAN FOR ENGINEERING BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS FOR BASIC SCIENCE AND CLINICAL TRANSLATION. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS R13 APPLICATION ARE TWO-FOLD. THE FIRST IS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO EIGHT ESI JUNIOR INVESTIGATORS AND TWELVE POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS OR GRADUATE STUDENTS, WHOSE SUBMITTED ABSTRACTS WILL BE SELECTED FOR PODIUM PRESENTATION BASED ON SCIENTIFIC MERIT, WITH A FOCUS ON PROMOTING WOMEN AND UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES. THE MEETING WILL PROVIDE THESE INVESTIGATORS WITH ESSENTIAL EXPOSURE AND MENTORING TO LAUNCH OR EXPAND THEIR ACADEMIC RESEARCH CAREERS. THE SECOND OBJECTIVE IS TO FOSTER ADOPTION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO THE CMBE RESEARCH COMMUNITY AND PROMOTE THE INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION. THE MEETING WILL PROVIDE A PLATFORM TO EXPOSE RESEARCHERS IN ENGINEERING, CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY, AND DATA SCIENCE TO THE LATEST TECHNIQUES AND DEVELOP A PATHWAY TO INCREASE THE IMPACT OF CMBE RESEARCH IN HUMAN DISEASE. THE PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON APPLYING NOVEL AND ADVANCED CMBE TECHNIQUES, MATERIALS, AND MODEL SYSTEMS TO RESEARCH IN VARIED PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND REGENERATIVE MODELS. THIS OPPORTUNITY WILL HAVE SOCIETAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE FIELD OF BIOMECHANICS, MECHANOBIOLOGY, BIOMATERIALS, TISSUE ENGINEERING, DEVELOPMENTAL BIOENGINEERING AND DISEASE MODELING, AND IN DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF RESEARCHERS AND ENGINEERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. THE BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING SOCIETY - CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOENGINEERING CONFERENCES ARE A LEADING FORUM FOR BRINGING TOGETHER DIVERSE, INTERDISCIPLINARY GROUPS OF RESEARCHERS TO DISCUSS ADVANCES IN HIGHLY FOCUSED SYMPOSIA. IN 2023, THE CONFERENCE WILL HAVE APPROXIMATELY 180-200 ATTENDEES PARTICIPATING MULTIPLE TECHNICAL THEMATIC SESSIONS THAT INCLUDE THE TOPICS OF CELL STATE TRANSITIONS, CELL COMPETITION IN DEVELOPMENT AND DISEASES, TRANSCRIPTIONAL NOISE AND CELL STATES, LINKS BETWEEN BIOPHYSICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL STATES, IMMUNE CELL STATES, AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND APPROACHES FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE. THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND AND PRESENT WILL BROADEN THE PARTICIPATING RESEARCHERS? TECHNICAL UNDERSTANDING, STIMULATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW IDEAS AND RESEARCH TOPICS, AND PROVIDE NUMEROUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES. WITH OVER 5,000 ATTENDEES AND 19 PARALLEL TECHNICAL PROGRAM TRACKS, THE NEXT THREE MEETINGS WILL PROVIDE OVER 3,600 RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PRESENTATIONS IN PODIUM OR POSTER PRESENTATION FORMAT. NIH FUNDS WILL SUPPORT THREE KEY COMPONENTS: TRAVEL AWARDS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, GRADUATE STUDENTS, POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS, AND EARLY-CAREER FACULTY PRESENTING ORIGINAL RESEARCH, SELECTED THROUGH A COMPETITIVE REVIEW BASED ON RESEARCH MERIT AND CAREER IMPACT. THE THEME OF THIS “THE CONVERGENCE OF THREE PILLARS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR FIELD: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION.” BMES SEEKS FUNDING FROM THE NIH TO SUPPORT TRAVEL AWARDS THAT WILL ENHANCE DIVERSITY OF PARTICIPANTS AT THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE BMES. SPECIFICALLY, NIBIB FUNDING WILL BE USED TO SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: 7 STUDENT GROUPS ATTEND THE HIGH SCHOOL POSTER COMPETITION WHO WOULD OTHERWISE NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND DUE TO COST. EACH STUDENT GROUP WILL RECEIVE 1:1 FUNDING MATCHES FOR EITHER ONE OR TWO STUDENTS AND ONE CHAPERONE TO REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE, ATTEND A SPECIAL AWARDS EVENT, AND OFFSET TRAVEL EXPENSES.
