UNITY HOUSE SUBSTANCE USE TREATMENT CENTER RENOVATIONS - THE COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING / CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING AWARDED AS PART OF CONSOLIDATED APPROPRIATIONS ACT 2026 (P.L. 119-75) WILL SUPPORT RENOVATION OF THE VACANT GUNDERSEN HEALTH SYSTEM BUILDING AT 2221 SIMS PLACE IN LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN TO SERVE AS A MODERN RESIDENTIAL SUBSTANCE USE TREATMENT CENTER FOR ADULT MEN AND WOMEN. IT WILL INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PATIENT PLACEMENT SPACES FROM SIXTEEN TO TWENTY. THE NEED IS URGENT. WESTERN WISCONSIN CONTINUES TO FACE HIGH DEMAND FOR ADDICTION TREATMENT, LONG WAITLISTS, AND ONGOING OVERDOSE-RELATED NEEDS. THE CURRENT UNITY HOUSE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S PROGRAMS ARE IN SEPARATE, OFF-SITE AGING BUILDINGS WITH MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS, LIMITED PRIVACY, CRAMPED SHARED SPACES, AND INEFFICIENT LAYOUTS THAT MAKE CARE HARDER TO DELIVER. STAFF SPEND TIME TRANSPORTING PATIENTS BETWEEN SITES TO OTHER CAMPUS SERVICES, WHICH REDUCES EFFICIENCY AND LIMITS CROSS-COVERAGE. THE RENOVATED FACILITY WILL BRING BOTH UNITY HOUSE PROGRAMS TOGETHER ON THE MAIN MEDICAL CAMPUS AND CREATE A MORE THERAPEUTIC, FUNCTIONAL ENVIRONMENT. PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDE UPDATED BEDROOMS, BATHROOMS, COMMON AREAS, STORAGE, HVAC, ELECTRICAL, SECURITY, FLOORING, LIGHTING, CASEWORK, FURNITURE, FIXTURES, AND EQUIPMENT. THE NEW SPACE WILL SUPPORT SEMI-PRIVATE ROOMS, LARGER SHARED AREAS, BETTER CLIMATE CONTROL, AND FLEXIBLE ROOMS FOR LIFE SKILLS TRAINING, ART THERAPY, MINDFULNESS, EXERCISE, AND OTHER RECOVERY-FOCUSED ACTIVITIES. BY LOCATING RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CLOSER TO INPATIENT AND OUTPATIENT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH, THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, PRIMARY CARE, AND OTHER CAMPUS SERVICES, THE PROJECT WILL IMPROVE REFERRALS, COORDINATION, AND PATIENT FLOW ACROSS THE CONTINUUM OF CARE. IT WILL REDUCE TRAVEL BARRIERS FOR PATIENTS AND STAFF, IMPROVE PRIVACY AND DIGNITY, AND SUPPORT STRONGER ENGAGEMENT AND RETENTION IN TREATMENT.
