RURAL HOSPITAL PROVIDER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM - MCPHERSON HOSPITAL, A RURAL PROSPECTIVE PAYMENT SYSTEM (PPS) HOSPITAL LOCATED IN MCPHERSON, KANSAS, IS REQUESTING FUNDING THROUGH THE HRSA RURAL HOSPITAL PROVIDER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (HRSA-26-105) TO STRENGTHEN AND SUSTAIN ITS HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE THROUGH COMPREHENSIVE EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT AND WORKFORCE SUPPORT INITIATIVES. SERVING A PREDOMINANTLY RURAL POPULATION, MCPHERSON HOSPITAL PROVIDES ESSENTIAL INPATIENT, EMERGENCY, OUTPATIENT, SURGICAL, REHABILITATION, AND SPECIALTY HEALTHCARE SERVICES TO RESIDENTS THROUGHOUT MCPHERSON COUNTY AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. LIKE MANY RURAL HOSPITALS, MCPHERSON HOSPITAL FACES PERSISTENT WORKFORCE CHALLENGES, INCLUDING PROVIDER SHORTAGES, INCREASED STAFF TURNOVER, RECRUITMENT DIFFICULTIES, AND GROWING DEMANDS FOR SPECIALIZED CLINICAL SKILLS. THESE CHALLENGES PLACE ADDITIONAL STRAIN ON EXISTING STAFF AND THREATEN THE HOSPITAL'S ABILITY TO MAINTAIN ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY HEALTHCARE SERVICES FOR RURAL RESIDENTS. GRANT FUNDING WILL BE USED TO IMPLEMENT A COMPREHENSIVE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOCUSED ON EMPLOYEE EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LEADERSHIP TRAINING, CLINICAL SKILL ENHANCEMENT, AND STAFF RETENTION. PROJECT ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES, SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION SUPPORT, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, CROSS-TRAINING INITIATIVES, WORKFORCE RESILIENCY EDUCATION, AND OTHER EVIDENCE-BASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO STRENGTHEN EMPLOYEE COMPETENCIES AND IMPROVE RETENTION. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SUPPORT WORKFORCE PLANNING EFFORTS THAT PREPARE STAFF TO RESPOND TO CHANGING HEALTHCARE NEEDS WHILE ENHANCING ORGANIZATIONAL STABILITY. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO IMPROVE WORKFORCE RETENTION, INCREASE EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCY, EXPAND CLINICAL CAPACITY, AND REDUCE THE OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH WORKFORCE SHORTAGES. BY INVESTING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ITS EXISTING WORKFORCE, MCPHERSON HOSPITAL WILL ENHANCE THE QUALITY AND CONTINUITY OF PATIENT CARE WHILE STRENGTHENING ITS ABILITY TO PROVIDE ESSENTIAL HEALTHCARE SERVICES TO ITS RURAL COMMUNITY. THROUGH THIS INVESTMENT, MCPHERSON HOSPITAL WILL BUILD A MORE RESILIENT HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE CAPABLE OF MEETING CURRENT AND FUTURE HEALTHCARE NEEDS. THE PROJECT SUPPORTS THE GOALS OF THE HRSA RURAL HOSPITAL PROVIDER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM BY IMPROVING WORKFORCE STABILITY, PRESERVING ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL HEALTHCARE SERVICES, AND PROMOTING THE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF RURAL HEALTHCARE DELIVERY IN CENTRAL KANSAS.
