PURPOSE: THE VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) GRANT WAS ESTABLISHED AS A MATCHING GRANT PROGRAM TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR ORGANIZATIONS WHO SUPPORT COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE VITA GRANT PROGRAM PROVIDES FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO ORGANIZATIONS WHO 1) EXTEND SERVICES TO UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS IN HARDEST TO REACH AREAS BOTH URBAN AND NON-URBAN; 2) INCREASE THE CAPACITY TO FILE RETURNS ELECTRONICALLY; 3) HEIGHTEN QUALITY CONTROL; 4) ENHANCE TRAINING OF VOLUNTEERS; AND 5) SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE ACCURACY RATE OF RETURNS PREPARED AT VITA SITES. END GOAL/EXPECTED OUTCOMES: VITA GRANT RECIPIENTS ARE EXPECTED TO 1) FOLLOW EXISTING GUIDANCE GOVERNING VITA SITE OPERATIONS; 2) ENSURE AT LEAST 90% OF RETURNS PREPARED ARE FOR INDIVIDUALS WHOSE INCOME IS EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN THE MAXIMUM EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT (EITC) THRESHOLDS; 2) FILE ALL ELIGIBLE RETURNS ELECTRONICALLY; 3) ACHIEVE 100% OF THEIR RETURN PRODUCTION GOALS; 4) BECOME MORE EFFICIENT WITH GRANT FUNDS; AND 5) SHOW INCREMENTAL INCREASES IN RETURN PREPARATION EACH YEAR. OUR COMMUNITIES SUCCEED WHEN ALL OF OUR CHILDREN SUCCEED IN SCHOOL; WHEN ADULTS CAN SECURE A GOOD JOB, MANAGE THEIR FINANCES AND HAVE ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE. OUR MISSION ALIGNS STRONGLY WITH THE CNCS PROGRAMMING PRIORITY AREAS OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY, EDUCATION AND HEALTHY FUTURES. THE VISTA PROJECT WILL HELP UWB ATTAIN THE GOAL OF PROVIDING CARING, TRAINED MENTORS TO STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH READING IN SECOND AND THIRD GRADE; DEVELOP ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL AS COMMUNITY AWARENESS TO HELP REDUCE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP FOR STUDENTS OF COLOR; PROMOTE INCREASED READING ACTIVITY FOR ALL LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS OF BREVARD WITH A FOCUS ON LOW-INCOME YOUTH; PROVIDE ACCESS TO QUALITY FINANCIAL EDUCATION TOOLS AND GUIDANCE. THE LONG-TERM PROJECT GOAL IS TO INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUCCESS WITH OUR YOUTH IN ORDER TO STRENGTHEN THEIR CHANCES FOR A SECURE FUTURE THROUGH MULTIPLE APPROACHES WHICH EXPANDS AND IMPROVES EXISTING PROGRAMS AND IDENTIFIES GAPS IN SERVICE FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT. WE EXPECT OUR EFFORTS TO IMPACT 4,800 OF CHILDREN IN BREVARD THROUGH OUR WORK IN LITERACY AND WELLNESS AND AT LEAST 4,500 ADULTS THROUGH OUR FINANCIAL STABILITY PROGRAMS. THE SIX VISTA'S WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT BY PERFORMING ACTIVITIES SUCH AS RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING OF MENTORS; COORDINATING EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN AND INCREASE RESOURCES TO MINORITY CHILDREN, PROMOTE THE COMMUNITY AWARENESS OF FINANCIAL WELLNESS RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN THE COMMUNITY AND IMPROVE METHODS OF DELIVERY FOR EACH OF THE EXISTING PROGRAMS OVER A ONE YEAR PERIOD.
