FUTURE GENERATIONS UNIVERSITY WILL WORK WITH BOTH WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY AND WEST VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY TO CONDUCT THE NEEDED TECHNICAL AND FIELD RESEARCH TO TEST AND WRITE THIS BEST PRACTICE MANUAL. RESEARCH WILL BE CONDUCTED ON THE ENGINEERING OF NATURAL AND HYBRID VACUUM SYSTEMS UTILIZING 316INCH TUBING. SANITATION STUDIES WILL ALSO BE CONDUCTED ON 316INCH TUBING TO DETERMINE EFFECTIVE PRACTICES FOR PRESERVING TUBING LONGEVITY. LASTLY LABBASED ANALYSIS ON MICROBIAL GROWTH WILL BE USED TO TEST AND VALIDATE FIELDBASED SANITATION STUDIES. EXTENSION OF RESEARCH FINDINGS WILL REACH APPROXIMATELY 500 MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS WHO ARE USING NATURAL VACUUM SAP COLLECTION SYSTEMS IN MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS OF APPALACHIA AND NEW ENGLAND. INDIVIDUAL STUDY RESEARCH REPORTS WILL BE PRESENTED AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL GATHERINGS OF MAPLE SYRUP RESEARCHERS AND PRODUCERS THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT PERIOD. DURING THE FINAL YEAR OF THE PROJECT EDUCATION ACTIVITIES WILL CENTER ON INCREASING ADOPTION AND USE OF THE NATURAL VACUUM MANUAL THROUGH REGIONAL WORKSHOPS AND NATIONAL ONLINE EXTENSION. IT WILL PROMOTE THE US MAPLE SYRUP INDUSTRY BY SHOWCASING THE ROLE OF SUGAR-MAKING IN APPALACHIAN CULTURE, ECOLOGY, AND HISTORY. IT WILL IMPROVE CONSUMER DEMAND FOR APPALACHIAN AS WELL AS US MADE MAPLE SAP AND SYRUP PRODUCTS. SWEET APPALACHIA HAS TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES:1) RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF DOMESTIC MAPLE SYRUP THROUGH INCREASED MARKETING, PROMOTION, STORYTELLING, AND ENHANCING AGRITOURISM EFFORTS.2) CREATE NEW MARKET ACCESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR APPALACHIAN MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS THROUGH DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER MARKETING AS WELL AS BROKERING BULK AND WHOLESALE SYRUP SALES ACROSS THE REGION. THIS PROJECT WORKS WITH PRODUCERS AND COMMUNITIES TO CREATE THE ENABLING ENVIRONMENT FOR AN INCREASE IN SALES OF APPALACHIAN-PRODUCED SYRUP AND VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS WITHIN THE CENTRAL APPALACHIAN REGION DEFINED AS WESTERN MARYLAND, APPALACHIAN VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, AND EASTERN KENTUCKY. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROJECT WILL ESTABLISH THE CROSS COMMUNITY CLIMATE COLLABORATIVE (C4). C4 IS STRUCTURED TO SUPPORT DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES BY GIVING THEM ACCESS TO INFORMATION PERTAINING TO ISSUES THAT DIRECTLY IMPACT THEM. IT WILL ALSO FOSTER RELATIONSHIP-BUILDING AND FRUITFUL COMMUNICATIONS WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND GOVERNMENT DECISION-MAKERS. PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS ISSUES WITH MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL GOVERNING BODIES.SUBRECIPIENT:THE VILLAGE OF BROADVIEW IS THE STATUTORY APPLICANT FOR THIS GRANT. THE VILLAGE OF BROADVIEW WILL RECEIVE A SUBAWARD FOR THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORK DONE WITHIN THE PROGRAM. THEY WILL LIAISE WITH COMMUNITIES ENROLLED IN THE CROSS COMMUNITY CLIMATE COLLABORATIVE. THEY WILL ALSO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THE SEVEN GENERATIONS AHEAD TEAM THROUGH ENSURING COMMUNITY CONCERNS ARE HEARD AND PRIORITIZED. WE WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS GOAL WITH 1) RESEARCH AND A LOCAL PROCUREMENT PILOT AT THE CIA, AND 2) A NEW ONLINE MARKETPLACE TO FACILITATE THE SOURCING LOGISTICS, BILLING, SUPPLY-DEMAND PLANNING, AND INVENTORY CHALLENGES FACED BY PRODUCERS AND THE CIA. FUTURE GENERATIONS UNIVERSITY AND ITS PARTNERS WILL THEN CONDUCT AN EXTENSION PROGRAM IN THE USE OF THE MANUAL. THE PURPOSE IS TO CREATE THE MUCHNEEDED NATURAL VACUUM COROLLARY TO THE CORNELL UNIVERSITY NEW YORK STATE TUBING NOTEBOOK WHICH PRIMARILY ADDRESSES 516INCH TUBING SYSTEMS USING ARTIFICIAL VACUUM. FUTURE GENERATIONS UNIVERSITY WILL WORK WITH BOTH WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY AND WEST VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY TO CONDUCT THE NEEDED TECHNICAL AND FIELD RESEARCH TO TEST AND WRITE THIS BEST PRACTICE MANUAL. RESEARCH WILL BE CONDUCTED ON THE ENGINEERING OF NATURAL AND HYBRID VACUUM SYSTEMS UTILIZING 316INCH TUBING. SANITATION STUDIES WILL ALSO BE CONDUCTED ON 316INCH TUBING TO DETERMINE EFFECTIVE PRACTICES FOR PRESERVING TUBING LONGEVITY. LASTLY LABBASED ANALYSIS ON MICROBIAL GROWTH WILL BE USED TO TEST AND VALIDATE FIELDBASED SANITATION STUDIES. EXTENSION OF RESEARCH FINDINGS WILL REACH APPROXIMATELY 500 MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS WHO ARE USING NATURAL VACUUM SAP COLLECTION SYSTEMS IN MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS OF APPALACHIA AND NEW ENGLAND. INDIVIDUAL STUDY RESEARCH REPORTS WILL BE PRESENTED AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL GATHERINGS OF MAPLE SYRUP RESEARCHERS AND PRODUCERS THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT PERIOD. DURING THE FINAL YEAR OF THE PROJECT EDUCATION ACTIVITIES WILL CENTER ON INCREASING ADOPTION AND USE OF THE NATURAL VACUUM MANUAL THROUGH REGIONAL WORKSHOPS AND NATIONAL ONLINE EXTENSION. APPROXIMATELY 250 PRODUCERS IN WEST VIRGINIA MARYLAND VIRGINIA AND PENNSYLVANIA ARE EXPECTED TO ADOPT IMPROVED TUBING AND SANITATION METHODS.

INITIAL ACTIVITIES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AND TESTED ACROSS WEST VIRGINIA MARYLAND KENTUCKY AND VIRGINIA. A STANDARDIZED MAPLE CURRICULUM FOR PREK12 STUDENTS WILL BE CREATED. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL THEN WORK WITH EDUCATORS ACROSS APPALACHIA TO TEST AND REFINE THE CURRICULUM. SWEET ECONOMIC FUTURES WILL DIRECTLY ADDRESS THE FACT THAT THE U.S. MAPLE INDUSTRY CURRENTLY LACKS A COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM FOR PREK12 AGED STUDENTS. MANY LOCALIZED EFFORTS TO ENGAGE KIDS WITH MAPLE HAVE BEEN STARTED. THESE HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED OUTSIDE OF STATE OR NATIONAL LEARNING STANDARDS. SWEET ECONOMIC FUTURES WILL THEREFORE BUILD UPON THESE EXISTING EFFORTS AND RESOURCES. IT WILL DO SO BY UTILIZING EXISTING BEST PRACTICES WHILE ALSO ADDING INCREASED ACADEMIC RIGOR AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO EDUCATORS AND MAPLE PRODUCERS. THIS PROJECT WILL BRING TOGETHER STATE DEPARTMENTS OF AGRICULTURE EDUCATION AND FORESTRY INTO DIRECT COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO ADVANCE THE NEXT GENERATION OF SYRUP PRODUCERS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES.

THIS MARKET DEVELOPMENT AND PROMOTION PROJECT WILL DIRECTLY SUPPORT THE US MAPLE INDUSTRY BY INCREASING THE DEMAND FOR LOCAL AND REGIONAL MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCTION IN APPALACHIA. IT WILL INCREASE ACCESS TO MAPLE PRODUCTS, BY SUPPORTING MARKET OPPORTUNITIES FOR APPALACHIAN PRODUCERS. IT WILL PROMOTE THE US MAPLE SYRUP INDUSTRY BY SHOWCASING THE ROLE OF SUGAR-MAKING IN APPALACHIAN CULTURE, ECOLOGY, AND HISTORY. IT WILL IMPROVE CONSUMER DEMAND FOR APPALACHIAN AS WELL AS US MADE MAPLE SAP AND SYRUP PRODUCTS. SWEET APPALACHIA HAS TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES:1) RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF DOMESTIC MAPLE SYRUP THROUGH INCREASED MARKETING, PROMOTION, STORYTELLING, AND ENHANCING AGRITOURISM EFFORTS.2) CREATE NEW MARKET ACCESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR APPALACHIAN MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS THROUGH DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER MARKETING AS WELL AS BROKERING BULK AND WHOLESALE SYRUP SALES ACROSS THE REGION. THIS PROJECT WORKS WITH PRODUCERS AND COMMUNITIES TO CREATE THE ENABLING ENVIRONMENT FOR AN INCREASE IN SALES OF APPALACHIAN-PRODUCED SYRUP AND VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS WITHIN THE CENTRAL APPALACHIAN REGION DEFINED AS WESTERN MARYLAND, APPALACHIAN VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, AND EASTERN KENTUCKY. THIS PROJECT WILL WORK WITH 100 PRODUCERS AND 60 COMMUNITIES TO BUILD THE NETWORK OF SUPPORT REQUIRED FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL SKILLS WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH TECHNICAL TRAINING AND LAND USE MANAGEMENT PLANNING. APPALACHIAN MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCTION WILL INCREASE AS A RESULT. WOODLOT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND BEHAVIORS WILL IMPROVE. MAPLE ENTERPRISES WILL BECOME MORE FINANCIALLY VIABLE. WE ARE THE LEADING INTERGENERATIONAL LITERACY PROGRAM IN GREATER BOSTON, ENGAGING 240+ COMMUNITY OLDER ADULTS (ALL 50+ YEARS) AS HIGHLY TRAINED LITERACY COACHES TO PROVIDE TARGETED, HIGH-DOSAGE TUTORING TO OVER 1,500 STRUGGLING EARLY READERS ANNUALLY. WE ENVISION A DAY WHEN ALL STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF ZIP CODE, ENTER THE FOURTH GRADE AS PROFICIENT READERS POISED FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND EMPLOY A UNIQUE INTERGENERATIONAL MODEL TO SOLVE THE COMMUNITY PROBLEM OF CHILDHOOD ILLITERACY. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROJECT WILL ESTABLISH THE CROSS COMMUNITY CLIMATE COLLABORATIVE (C4). C4 IS STRUCTURED TO SUPPORT DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES BY GIVING THEM ACCESS TO INFORMATION PERTAINING TO ISSUES THAT DIRECTLY IMPACT THEM. IT WILL ALSO FOSTER RELATIONSHIP-BUILDING AND FRUITFUL COMMUNICATIONS WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND GOVERNMENT DECISION-MAKERS. BY CREATING MORE INFORMED CITIZENS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE INTERACTING WITH DECISIONMAKERS, C4 WILL DEVELOP RESIDENTS WHO ARE WELL-EQUIPPED TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES ON MATTERS SUCH AS CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE. THE PROJECT WILL ENGAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM BROADVIEW, MAYWOOD, BELLWOOD, HILLSIDE, AND BERWYN, ILLINOIS. ACTIVITIES:SEVEN GENERATIONS AHEAD WILL BUILD AND ENHANCE THEIR COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY WORKING GROUP PROGRAM, FURTHER ENGAGING RESIDENTS AND STAKEHOLDERS IN DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING PRIORITY ACTIONS. THIS PROJECT, WILL BRING THE DEVELOPMENT OF USEFUL TOOLS FOR TRACKING CLIMATE METRICS AND GOALS, SUCH AS A CLEAN ENERGY ROADMAP AND A CLIMATE AND EQUITY DASHBOARD. THE INVOLVED COMMUNITIES WILL BE CONNECTED WITH FEDERAL AND STATE GRANT WRITING THROUGH THE TEAM BUILT BY SEVEN GENERATIONS AHEAD AND THEIR PARTNERS. C4 INTENDS TO GROW ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH CITIES AND VILLAGES IN THE AREA, FURTHERING THEIR IMPACT ON LOW TO MODERATE INCOME COMMUNITIES. LASTLY, C4 WILL IMPLEMENT A 6-8 WEEK CLIMATE AND EQUITY LEADERSHIP LAB. THIS LAB WAS CREATED TO EDUCATE COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON THE STATE OF THE CLIMATE, EQUITABLE CLEAN ENERGY, TRENDING POLICIES/STRATEGIES ACROSS CONTENT AREAS, AND INTERNATIONAL, NATIONAL AND REGIONAL GOALS. PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS ISSUES WITH MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL GOVERNING BODIES.SUBRECIPIENT:THE VILLAGE OF BROADVIEW IS THE STATUTORY APPLICANT FOR THIS GRANT. THE VILLAGE OF BROADVIEW WILL RECEIVE A SUBAWARD FOR THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORK DONE WITHIN THE PROGRAM. THEY WILL LIAISE WITH COMMUNITIES ENROLLED IN THE CROSS COMMUNITY CLIMATE COLLABORATIVE. THEY WILL ALSO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THE SEVEN GENERATIONS AHEAD TEAM THROUGH ENSURING COMMUNITY CONCERNS ARE HEARD AND PRIORITIZED. THE FOLLOWING SUBAWARDS ARE FOR THE COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY AND OUTREACH STAFF REPRESENTING THE OTHER 4 COMMUNITIES THAT WILL BE SERVED. THE 4 COMMUNITIES ARE BELLWOOD, MAYWOOD, BERWYN, AND HILLSIDE, IL. JUST AS THE VILLAGE OF BROADVIEW, THESE PEOPLE WILL REPRESENT THEIR COMMUNITIES IN ROUNDTABLES, DECISION-MAKING, ACTION PLANNING.
