ION LUNG BRONCHOSCOPY AT NORTON COMMUNITY HOSPITAL - THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS A ONE-TIME CAPITAL FUNDING REQUEST TO PURCHASE THE ION LUNG BRONCHOSCOPY SYSTEM AT NORTON COMMUNITY HOSPITAL & BLACK LUNG CLINIC. THE ION IS A ROBOTIC-ASSISTED PLATFORM FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE BIOPSY IN THE LUNG. ION COLLECTS LUNG TISSUE SAMPLES FOR BIOPSY IN A SAFE AND SIMPLE MANNER, USING AN ULTRATHIN, ULTRA-MANEUVERABLE CATHETER TO REACH EVEN SMALL LESIONS IN ALL 18 SEGMENTS OF THE LUNG, MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO REACH AND BIOPSY DIFFICULT-TO-ACCESS NODULES THAT CANNOT BE EFFECTIVELY SAMPLED THROUGH TRADITIONAL METHODS. NORTON COMMUNITY HOSPITAL'S BLACK LUNG CLINIC OFFERS THE REGION'S ONLY BLACK LUNG PROGRAM APPROVED AND CERTIFIED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, SERVING MORE THAN 2,600 PATIENTS ANNUALLY. THIS ONE-TIME CAPITAL INVESTMENT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE PULMONARY DIAGNOSTIC CAPABILITIES AND IMPROVE ACCESS TO SPECIALIZED LUNG CARE FOR RESIDENTS THROUGHOUT SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA AND THE SURROUNDING APPALACHIAN REGION.
