AS SUCH, THEY PROVIDE A WIDE ARRAY OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES (ESS) OF ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SOCIETAL IMPORTANCE. BALANCING THESE ESS TO EQUALLY SATISFY THE NEEDS OF PRODUCERS, LAND MANAGERS, AND THE PUBLIC IS CHALLENGING BUT NECESSARY TO DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE AGROECOSYSTEMS. INNOVATIVE LIVESTOCK GRAZING, HOWEVER, HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT DIVERSE STAKEHOLDERS BY GENERATING ESS VALUED BY ALL. FIRST, WE WILL EXAMINE HOW HISTORICAL GRAZING SYSTEMS THAT DIFFERED IN GRAZING DURATION (4-, 2-, AND 0-MONTHS) AND TIMING (EARLY- AND LATE-SEASON) AFFECTED ES GENERATION. SECOND, WE WILL TRACK HOW ES GENERATION CHANGES WHEN AN INNOVATIVE SHORT-DURATION VARIABLE-TIMING GRAZING SYSTEM IS IMPLEMENTED. A COMMON SOLUTION TO BALANCE GRAZING AND OTHER ECOSYSTEM SERIVCES IS TO DE-STOCK RANGELANDS - BUT THIS CAN HARM RANCHER LIVELIHOODS. AS AN ALTERNATIVE, WE EXAMINE HOW GRAZING SYSTEMS THAT ALTER GRAZING DURATION (THE AMOUNT OF TIME CATTLE ARE GRAZED IN A LOCATION) AND TIMING (WHEN IN THE SEASON CATTLE ARE GRAZED) CAN IMPROVE ECOSYSTEM SERVICE SUPPLY. THE GOAL OF OUR RESEARCH IS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT INNOVATIVE GRAZING STRATEGIES CAN MAINTAIN A DIVERSE SUITE OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES ON PUBLIC LANDS WHILE ALSO SUPPORTING PRODUCER LIVELIHOODS.WE WILL FOCUS ON STREAM AREAS, WHICH ARE KEY LOCATIONS FOR ECOSYSTEM SERVICE PRODUCTION IN ARID RANGELANDS, AND EXAMINE SERVICES DESIRED BY LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING: WATER QUALITY, SAGE-GROUSE HABITAT, EROSION CONTROL, AND FORAGE RECOVERY. WE WILL FIRST LINK ECOSYSTEM SERVICE SUPPLY TO GRAZING DURATION AND TIMING BY COMPARING SERVICE GENERATION AMONG COMMONLY EMPLOYED GRAZING SYSTEMS IN OUR REGION. THESE INCLUDE: CONTINUOUS-TURNOUT (WHICH IS A LONG-DURATION SYSTEM) AND 4-PASTURE ROTATION (WHICH IS A MEDIUM-DURATION SYSTEM). THE THREE CREEKS GRAZING PLAN ALTERED GRAZING ACROSS 57,000 HA OF PUBLIC-PRIVATE RANGELAND IN 2022. A MAJOR INNOVATION OF THIS PLAN IS TO USE GRAZING DURATION (I.E., LENGTH OF TIME GRAZED) AND TIMING (I.E., THE SEASON OF GRAZING) AS MANAGEMENT TOOLS TO BALANCE LIVESTOCK DISTURBANCE WITH THE GENERATION OF OTHER SOCIETY-VALUED RIPARIAN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES SUCH AS CLEAN WATER, INCREASED WATER QUANTITY, RIPARIAN HABITAT FOR WILDLIFE (E.G., FISH SAGE-GROUSE), AND EROSION CONTROL. ADDITIONALLY RESTORATION PROJECTS ACROSS THE UPPER BEAR RIVER WATERSHED MAY COMPOUND THE BENEFICIAL OUTCOMES OF THE ALTERED GAZING MANAGEMENT ON THE THREE CREEKS PROJECT AREA AND PROVIDE ADDITIONAL BENEFITS BEYOND THE PROJECT AREA.WE WILL COLLECT AND ANALYZE DATA ON WATER QUALITY, WATER DISCHARGE, RIPARIAN ZONE EXPANSION, EROSION POTENTIAL, RIPARIAN HERBACEOUS BIOMASS, SOIL HEALTH AND CARBON (E.G., INFILTRATION, BULK DENSITY COMPACTION), STREAMBANK STABILITY, HERBACEOUS BIODIVERSITY, SAGE-GROUSE RIPARIAN HABITAT QUALITY, AND BIOCRUST COVER DEPENDING ON FUNDING AVAILABLE VIA THE BLM AND OTHER SOURCES.THIS PROPOSED PROJECT IDENTIFIES HOW MANAGERS CAN BALANCE ONE OF THE MOST PERSISTENT, AND AT TIMES CONTROVERSIAL, USES OF PUBLIC LAND CATTLE GRAZING WITH THE SUSTAINABLE GENERATION OF ADDITIONAL STAKEHOLDER VALUED RIPARIAN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. THESE SERVICES INCLUDE: CLEAN WATER, SUSTAINED WATER YIELD IN STREAMS, EROSION CONTROL, RIPARIAN HERBACEOUS BIOMASS PRODUCTION, AND HEALTHY RIPARIAN HABITAT FOR BROODING SAGE-GROUSE AND FISH. OUR STUDY IS NOVEL BECAUSE WE WILL EXAMINE HOW A GRAZING SYSTEM NOT USUALLY EMPLOYED ON US PUBLIC RANGELANDS (WATERSHED-SCALE TIME-CONTROLLED ROTATION) COMPARES WITH COMMONLY EMPLOYED GRAZING SYSTEMS (SEASON-LONG AND DEFERRED ROTATION), PLUS NO-GRAZING EXCLOSURES IN SUPPLYING THESE RIPARIAN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. IT WILL DOCUMENT THE CONSERVATION BENEFITS OF IMPLEMENTING THIS NEW GRAZING SYSTEM BY COMPARING RIPARIAN CONDITIONS PRE-VS POST-IMPLEMENTATION. IT WILL ALSO EXAMINE HOW ADDITIONAL RESTORATION ACTIONS ACROSS THE UPPER BEAR RIVER WATERSHED AFFECT RIPARIAN HEALTH.RESULTS FROM THIS PROJECT BENEFIT THE PUBLIC BY DETERMINING IF THE NEW GRAZING SYSTEM ACROSS THE THREE CREEKS AREA IMPROVES MULTIPLE RANGELAND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. THIS INCLUDES PROVIDING DATA TO INFORM HOW CATTLE GRAZING AFFECTS STREAM WATER QUALITY, WATER QUANTITY, FORAGE PRODUCTION, SAGE-GROUSE HABITAT, FISH HABITAT, AND RIPARIAN SOIL CARBON SEQUESTRATION. A COMMON SOLUTION TO BALANCE GRAZING AND OTHER ECOSYSTEM SERIVCES IS TO DE-STOCK RANGELANDS - BUT THIS CAN HARM RANCHER LIVELIHOODS. AS AN ALTERNATIVE, WE EXAMINE HOW GRAZING SYSTEMS THAT ALTER GRAZING DURATION (THE AMOUNT OF TIME CATTLE ARE GRAZED IN A LOCATION) AND TIMING (WHEN IN THE SEASON CATTLE ARE GRAZED) CAN IMPROVE ECOSYSTEM SERVICE SUPPLY. A MAJOR INNOVATION OF THIS PLAN IS TO USE GRAZING DURATION (I.E., LENGTH OF TIME GRAZED) AND TIMING (I.E., THE SEASON OF GRAZING) AS MANAGEMENT TOOLS TO BALANCE LIVESTOCK DISTURBANCE WITH THE GENERATION OF OTHER SOCIETY-VALUED RIPARIAN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES SUCH AS CLEAN WATER, INCREASED WATER QUANTITY, RIPARIAN HABITAT FOR WILDLIFE (E.G., FISH SAGE-GROUSE), AND EROSION CONTROL. OUR STUDY IS NOVEL BECAUSE WE WILL EXAMINE HOW A GRAZING SYSTEM NOT USUALLY EMPLOYED ON US PUBLIC RANGELANDS (WATERSHED-SCALE TIME-CONTROLLED ROTATION) COMPARES WITH COMMONLY EMPLOYED GRAZING SYSTEMS (SEASON-LONG AND DEFERRED ROTATION), PLUS NO-GRAZING EXCLOSURES IN SUPPLYING THESE RIPARIAN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. IT WILL DOCUMENT THE CONSERVATION BENEFITS OF IMPLEMENTING THIS NEW GRAZING SYSTEM BY COMPARING RIPARIAN CONDITIONS PRE-VS POST-IMPLEMENTATION. IT WILL ALSO EXAMINE HOW ADDITIONAL RESTORATION ACTIONS ACROSS THE UPPER BEAR RIVER WATERSHED AFFECT RIPARIAN HEALTH.RESULTS FROM THIS PROJECT BENEFIT THE PUBLIC BY DETERMINING IF THE NEW GRAZING SYSTEM ACROSS THE THREE CREEKS AREA IMPROVES MULTIPLE RANGELAND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. THE PROJECT WILL ADDITIONALLY HELP BLM MANAGERS ADAPTIVELY MANAGE THE THREE CREEKS GRAZING PROJECT, AND BROADER UPPER BEAR RIVER WATERSHED. THIS INCLUDES PROVIDING DATA TO INFORM HOW CATTLE GRAZING AFFECTS STREAM WATER QUALITY, WATER QUANTITY, FORAGE PRODUCTION, SAGE-GROUSE HABITAT, FISH HABITAT, AND RIPARIAN SOIL CARBON SEQUESTRATION. THIS ALSO INCLUDES ASSESSING HOW OTHER RESTORATION ACTIONS IN UPPER BEAR RIVER WATERSHED AFFECT THESE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. FINDINGS FROM THE PROPOSED WORK WILL ALLOW MANAGERS TO (1) UNDERSTAND BENEFITS TO RIPARIAN AREAS OF IMPLEMENTING THIS INNOVATIVE GRAZING MANAGEMENT PLAN, (2) USE COLLECTED DATA TO ADAPTIVELY MANAGE ONGOING GRAZING ACROSS THE LANDSCAPE TO BALANCE HEALTHY RIPARIAN AREAS WITH LIVESTOCK GRAZING, AND (3) LEARN WHAT ADDITIONAL ACTIONS MAY NEED TO BE TAKEN TO RESTORE ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONING IN AREAS WHERE CHANGES IN GRAZING DO NOT LEAD TO DESIRED IMPROVEMENTS IN RIPARIAN HEALTH.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO STRENGTHEN INDIGENOUS CONSERVATION CAPACITY IN PERUS YURA, INUYA, AND SEPAHUA WATERSHEDS IN ORDER TO PROTECT THREATENED ECOSYSTEMS, ENDANGERED SPECIES AND HABITATS, AND THE WAY OF LIFE OF THE SETTLED AND ISOLATED INDIGENOUS TRIBES WHO LIVE THERE. THESE RIVERS PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE 10-MILLION-HECTARE PURS MANU LANDSCAPE, WHICH CONTAINS SOME OF THE MOST REMOTE AND LEAST DISTURBED FORESTS IN THE ENTIRE AMAZON BASIN. HOWEVER, ALL THREE WATERSHEDS ARE CRITICALLY THREATENED BY ROAD CONSTRUCTION, ILLEGAL LOGGING, AND LAND TRAFFICKING FACILITATED BY THE LOGGER-NARCO MAFIA THAT HAS AGGRESSIVELY MOVED INTO THESE REMOTE LOWLAND FORESTS OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.WE WILL WORK WITH PERUS PARKS SERVICE, SERNANP, INDIGENOUS FEDERATIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS, AND INDIVIDUAL COMMUNITIES ON MEASURES THAT WILL PROMOTE MORE EFFECTIVE COMMUNITY VIGILANCE, IMPROVED PROTECTED AREA MANAGEMENT, SPECIES CONSERVATION, SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE USE, AND ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: (1) STRENGTHEN THE VIGILANCE CAPACITY OF EIGHT STRATEGICALLY-LOCATED COMMUNITIES BY PROVIDING EQUIPMENT, CONDUCTING REGULAR PATROLS, AND INTRODUCING THE SMART MONITORING TECHNOLOGY (2) IMPROVE THE MANAGEMENT EFFECTIVENESS OF THE YURA COMMUNAL CONSERVATION CONCESSION THROUGH VIGILANCE AND ADMINISTRATION TRAINING, AND PATROLS TO IDENTIFY POPULATIONS OF RARE AND ENDANGERED SPECIES (3) IMPLEMENT NEW MANAGEMENT PLANS FOR FOUR COMMUNITY LAKES FOCUSED ON PROVIDING SUSTAINABLE INCOME AND FOOD PRODUCTION WHILE PROTECTING THE ENDANGERED ARAPAIMA FISH (ARAPAIMA GIGAS) AND (4) WORK WITH TWO INDIGENOUS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATIONS TO PROMOTE LONG-TERM CONSERVATION OF VULNERABLE SPECIES AND HABITATS THROUGH REFORESTATION OF PALM TREES WITH ECONOMIC POTENTIAL, PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED MIGRATORY CATFISH, AND DEVELOPING STRATEGIES FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION AND RESILIENCE.THIS PROJECT BUILDS ON PROGRESS MADE OVER THE PAST 18 MONTHS WITH SUPPORT FROM USFWS AND OTHER DONORS.
